Santiago Rivera, member of the Association of Retired Sailors of the Sea and Related.
Antonio Abad “ Gacha”, president of the Association of Retired Sailors of the Sea and Related.
Narciso González, first sea councilor of Spain in Burela, head of coast guards in the Lugo-Ortegal area, and former fisherman in Burela.
To learn more:
The first Fishermen´s Cooperative of Burela was founded on November 18, 1923, under the auspices of a Royal Decree from 1918 whose purpose was to reorganize the old fishermen’s institutions with state aid.”
Moncloa is the residence of the Prime Minister of Spain, from which the old fishermen took the name for their association’s premises, as many people believe that politicians are liars, much like some sailors who tell tall tales.
When a sailor thought that another was telling a lie or boasting, they used expressions like ‘tirar o peixe ao mar’ (throwing the fish to the sea). No sailor throws the fish into the sea because their livelihood depends on it, hence the significance of this expression, or other similar ones mentioned in the video.
